You’re a woman of multitudes, and you used to have a career. A business. A portfolio of projects. And now? Now you have a family, a baby or a handful of them. But the thing that it feels like you’re not allowed to talk about is real. You’re allowed to feel proud of your work with your family, about making the sacrifices you make every day.

And you’re also allowed to long for and miss the days of your old life and work. And you’re allowed to set down the expectations from social constructs we’ve been fed.

That’s why we need a New Home Economics. Here, we make that together. Here, we untangle the threads tugging at us.

In the New Home Economics, we as mothers know that what happens in our homes isn’t a backdrop to real life - it is real life.

Our homes are the safest places, the warmest places - the places where our families are nourished. Our homes are the first economy, the first school, the first laboratory - and the first place where we as mothers can define and redefine our roles as we honor all of our versions.

Hi, I’m Kristen Buchanan. I am a mother.

I am also a founder, a starter, a builder, a perpetual considerer, a fiber artist, a gardener, a farmer, and a seeker. I contain multitudes - and so do you.

I started The New Home Economist because I couldn’t find space in the venn diagram for me, and then I started hearing from other mothers who felt the same.

There are spaces for Career Women. Tradwives. Homesteaders. All-in crunchy moms. But where is the space for those of us who want to honor, and not forget, the parts of us who worked before children? And for those of us who don’t want to let go of those skills and the things that work did for our minds? Here is that space - I made it for us, and together, we’ll be New Home Economists.

Because we contain multitudes and each of those versions of ourselves are worthy. At The New Home Economist, you are welcome. I make things to help you keep in touch with every version of yourself, and I hope it helps you feel seen as the intelligent, driven, loving mother you are.
